I happened to find this Forum somewhat by accident while researching wireless alarm systems, and it's been a great source of information. Although I was in the alarm (and Locksmith) business for a number of years, I'm retired now but still like to keep up with current technology.
I'm currently using an older Ademco Vector multiplex panel (anyone remember those?), but planning to upgrade to an HAI Omni system in the near future. Although the Vector is still working well, I'd like to have increased options for control via phone or internet while travelling, as well as a better range of home automation features.
I'm currently evaluating wireless systems to help a close relative, and have been looking at the features of the DSC 9047, DSC Alexor, Visonic PowerMax and GE Simon systems. The Visonic systems have a good feature set, including the ability to deliver voice messages to cell phones rather than just a tone as with the DSC panels. However, the one line LCD on the Visonic is a bit of a disappointment. Both the DSC 9047 and Alexor look great, however I'm not the biggest fan of the DSC programming (but I'm sure I could manage).
At this point in my evaluation, I'm leaning towards recommending an Alexor system, however "cost" will likely be a factor in the decision, so the 9047 or Visonic systems may be preferable. The system will be installed in a new home which is completely finished (including the garage), so wireless is really the best option. I'm planning to disable the internal Siren during the install, both to avoid calling attention to the control location but also because there are small pets on the premises and the high pitched Piezo siren may cause them a lot of discomfort. Using at least one satellite Siren would be preferable.
It would be great if the Forum could add a section for "OTHER" alarm panels, for tips and information related to Omni systems or others.
It's nice to have a resource like this in case I have any questions.
